Some of the biggest names in Australian rock will dscend on Fremantle early next year for a massive concert to raise funds for a statue honouring late AC/DC singer Bon Scott.
Global rock behemoth AC/DC themselves could headline the event, which should see rock legends such as The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Cold Chisel playing alongside contemporary bands like Jet, Grinspoon, Dallas Crane, Wolfmother and The Casanovas.
Doug Thorncroft, organiser and president of the WA Bon Scott Fan Club, hopes to raise $100,000 and attract more than 25,000 rock fans to the special event scheduled for February 17 next year.
"It will be held in a unique venue with some very big names performing." he said yesterday.
The project has the support of Fremantle mayor Peter Tagliaferri and Fremantle Dockers coach Chris Connolly, and a private backer was willing to fund the expense of securing AC/DC for the event, Mr Thorncroft said.
Fremantle sculptor Greg James, whose work graces public spaces around Perth, Fremantle, Kings Park and the University of WA, is already working on drawings for the $80,000 life-size bronze statue of Scott in a "typical rock'n'roll pose".
The City of Fremantle is looking at five potential locations for the statue, with a public unveiling planned for July 7 at a 4000 capacity concert, Mr Thorncroft said.
The official installation of the statue in pencilled in for July 9, Scott's Birthday.
While the AC/DC frontman's grave at Fremantle cemetery was named on the National Heritage list last February, there were no public tributes to the town's famous son.
"He's the biggest rock'n'roll icon we've got, that Australia's got" Mr Thorncroft said. "He's buried here and we've got to look after our own."
Scott was lead singer of AC/DC from 1974, providing rough and ready vocals on their early hits TNT, Highway to Hell, Jailbreak and High Voltage until his death on February 19, 1980, from alcohol poisoning.
